I am excited to be exhibiting in spring at the beautiful Everglades Gardens, with fellow local artist, Owen Thompson. On the brink of a local government election, this exhibition is a timely reminder to reflect on our deep connection and responsibility to the land and the planet we inhabit.
Both Owen and I are avid bushwalkers, immersing ourselves in nature at a pace that enables us to look and feel deeply. The work in this exhibition mirrors our shifting gaze, from the colours of strips of bark to the sweep of cirrus clouds and rocky cliffs. With sensitivity and passion, the paintings pay homage to the frequently overlooked, nevertheless remarkable, natural features of the Blue Mountains and surrounding areas.
Owen’s images of Angophoras, Scribbly Gums and Mountain Ash bear witness to his persistent attention to and respect for the character of each species and each tree. His landscapes seek to capture the unique essence of colour and space found in the vistas of the Blue Mountains. Seamlessly combining watercolour, acrylic, pastels and oil paint, Owen breaks established conventions with media in his search for techniques that adequately represent the rich textures and forms he observes in nature.
Both Owen and I, advocate for a consideration of nature as intrinsically valuable. Our work celebrates grand mountain ranges, hidden craggy cliff faces, precious, yet unnoticed bushland, lone trees and vast skies. Each image invites viewers to see with fresh eyes, to fully appreciate their interconnectedness with all of nature, and all who inhabit this world.
When you visit the exhibition at Everglades House and Gardens Gallery you can take in sweeping views of the Mountains and stroll through the beautifully maintained gardens in spring profusion! You can explore the Art Deco house and, on weekends, stop for a delicious Devonshire tea in the tea rooms. Owen or I will be at the gallery most days to welcome you.
The National Trust administers the gardens and charges entry fees, however, this is waived for the exhibition opening on Saturday 7th September, 1 – 3 pm. In addition, I have secured 15 complimentary passes to offer you. If you would like one, please let me know.
