The Sacred Yes, Simpsons Gap, West MacDonnell Ranges, 2024, oil on board, framed diptych 30 x 80 cm
The chilly Autumn wind swept between the cliff faces of Simpsons Gap as I stood in the sandy riverbed in April 2024, to make this painting. The early morning sun fired up the rocks, making the river gums glow like gorge apparitions. This plein air landscape painting was made swiftly to capture the changing shadows and colours as the outback sun travelled over the gorge. Working in oil paint presents unique challenges as the surface of the painting remains wet and workable for days. To evoke the immediacy of the landscape and represent my experience of connecting with the place, I worked intuitively and with intense focus, despite the visiting tourists and buzzing flies!
Medium: Oil paint on two professional artist-quality plywood panels, framed in Tasmanian Oak and ready to hang
Location featured in the Painting: Ormiston Gorge, West MacDonnell Ranges, Central Australia
Genre: Contemporary Australian Landscape Art, Plein Air Landscape Painting
Style: Plein air landscape paintings are created outdoors, capturing natural light and the changing atmosphere. This technique results in expressive, dynamic brushwork that conveys spontaneity and a strong connection to nature, reflecting the artist’s direct experience of the landscape.
Subject: Rocky mountain range in the Australian outback, Ormiston Gorge
Colour Scheme: Cadmium Orange, Crimson, Burnt Umber, Blue (ultramarine, cobalt), Red Gold, Burnt Sienna, Magenta.
Features: A dramatic medium-sized artwork that captures the intense colour of Simpsons Gap in the Central Australian outback. This plein air painting is characterised by the bold cadmium orange cliffs and the distinctive composition of the gorge landform with ghost gums in the foreground. Typical of artworks made in the landscape, it captures the vigour of swift brushwork.

How to Hang Your Painting: This framed, medium-sized plein air landscape painting of the Australian outback is easy to install and ideal for display above furniture or on a feature wall such as an entryway. Best suited to a well-lit space in either modern or traditional interiors, good lighting enhances the full depth and vibrancy of the colour palette.
According to Australian gallery standards, artwork should be hung so the centre of the piece sits approximately 155 cm from the floor. Adjustments can be made based on ceiling height, surrounding furniture, and whether the space is used for sitting (like a dining room) or standing (like a hallway). To preserve its condition, avoid placing oil paintings in direct sunlight, as UV exposure may cause fading or discolouration.
Framing Details: This original oil painting on plywood is currently framed in Australian Tasmanian Oak in a natural finish, consistent with how contemporary artworks are often presented in galleries and private collections. It is fitted with professional D-hooks and wire for immediate hanging. Alternate custom framing can be arranged upon request.
