Commission a Painting

How to Commission a Painting

If you would like me to create a unique painting for you, please give me a call.

We’ll discuss the mood you want to evoke with the work, the size and format of the picture, the subject matter and the price. I need to understand the feeling and aesthetic you are after.

Next, depending on the scale of the work, I may visit your home to see the proposed hanging space. Together, we will assess the light, finalise the dimensions, discuss the subject and the proposed colour scheme.

I will put together a written proposal, including whether I make a to-scale sketch for you to approve. The proposal includes the specifications for the painting, the price, the timing of completion, and the payment plan.

How long will it take?

Depending on the size of the painting, it may take from 1 to 6 months to complete. If you have a specific deadline, I can attempt to accommodate that.

Can you see the progress of the painting?

If you would like to see photos of the work in progress, I can send them to you periodically. Alternatively, you may like to arrange to visit the studio.

Can you ask for changes?

Yes, of course, and also within reason. After you have approved the proposal and sketch, any major changes may incur a further cost. It’s important to me that you are very happy with your painting, so I work with you to ensure that!

What happens if you change your mind?

Any payments already made are forfeit, however, in exceptional circumstances, they may be applied to the purchase of another painting I have in stock.

Can I paint your special place? If it is a place I am familiar with or can visit, then I am very happy to make a painting of it. It’s very important to me to have a relationship with the landscapes that I paint - to inhabit the place and experience the light, sounds, smells and colours that make it unique. In the past, at the invitation of clients, I have travelled to and stayed in their special places to enable me to create a painting for them.

How do you go ahead and make this happen? It’s exciting to purchase a painting and even more, to have one made for you! Contact me now with your thoughts and we can arrange a time to meet.
