Settling, 2022, oil on canvas, 137 x 180cm

$6,900.00

This large-scale painting captures the rising mist over the valleys of the Blue Mountains on a cool winter’s day. Inspired by the view of the Blue Labyrinth that I often contemplate, the work evokes a universal spiritual experience of the mountains, where mist and fog are not only atmospheric phenomena but reflections of an inner journey.

The layers of translucent oil paint mirror the movement of the mist, subtly shifting between opacity and clarity. The valleys and ridgelines emerge from the haze, offering moments of clear sight before being veiled once more. The work speaks to the impermanence and mystery of nature, as well as the reflective space it creates for the viewer.

The pale blues and greys of the mist contrast with the deep, earthy browns of the land beneath, creating a sense of both stillness and quiet transformation. The scale of the painting invites the viewer into the spiritual landscape, drawing them into the mist as it rises and clears, offering a passage to deeper connection with the environment.

Medium: Oil paint on stretched canvas
Location: The Blue Labyrinth, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia
Subject: Mist rising from valleys in the Blue Mountains
Colour palette: Ultramarine, indigo, phthalo blue, white, grey, burnt umber

How to Install or Hang Your Painting:
This work is a large, atmospheric and ethereal landscape painting of the Blue Mountains on a misty morning. The minimalist semi-abstract style of the artwork makes it a suitable piece to accompany both contemporary and more traditional home decor.

The scale of the artwork means it needs to be installed with some space surrounding it, so that it can be best appreciated. The muted, naturalistic palette suits a range of both traditional and modern decor and colour schemes. It is an impactful piece for either a dark grey or neutral wall, where it can be viewed from some distance.

The Australian gallery standard recommends hanging a painting so that the mid-point of the artwork (height) is approximately 155 cm from the floor. This may vary depending on ceiling height, interior furniture, or whether it is a space where people will be sitting or standing, such as a living room or dining room. It is advisable to avoid hanging oil paintings in direct sunlight, as UV can damage the pigment, resulting in discolouration.

Framing:
An original oil painting on stretched canvas of this size and in a contemporary style is often left unframed when installed in art galleries, public or private collections. This work is currently unframed; however, framing can be arranged by agreement. The artwork is ready to hang on Australian gallery standard D-hooks and wire.
