Falling Upwards I, 2025, oil on canvas, 122 x 91.5 cm
This sky landscape painting captures the unique Australian light as it strikes the clouds above the bush near my artist’s studio in the Blue Mountains. It is as though the painting projects light through the colours and shapes on the canvas. It speaks about my deep relationship with nature and invites the viewer to experience a spiritual connection through the landscape.
One of my heroes, the artist Mark Rothko, an American Abstractionist, spoke about seeking ‘inner light’ in his paintings. When I studied Rothko and the Romantic tradition in which he fits, I learned about evoking spirituality in art through the subtle dynamics of colour, the use of warm and cool hues, transparency and opacity. All of these skills have been employed in this contemporary Australian landscape painting. More than just a painting of the sky, it is an invitation to experience nature as sacred. The gestural brush marks and composition of the artwork lead your gaze up and summon you to embrace falling upwards and into the sky.
Medium: Oil paint on stretched canvas, ready to hang
Location featured in the Painting: Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia
Genre: Contemporary Australian Landscape Art, Spiritual Landscape Painting
Style: This landscape painting appears to employ a realistic style, however, it is imbued with spiritual and emotive meaning and stories, making it characteristic of the Romantic style of landscape painting.
Subject: Dusk Sky with Clouds over the Australian Bush
Colour Scheme: Blue (ultramarine, indigo, pthalo, windsor, cobalt), White, Grey, Burnt Umber, Yellow
Features: This artwork has a confident composition, yet still evokes gentleness and stillness. Beautiful clouds rise and shift over the dusk light on the horizon that shines through the trees. In the tradition of spiritual landscape art, the painting evokes my deep soul connection with nature and the landscape I call home, the Blue Mountains. This medium-sized artwork will suit most homes or offices, whether with modern or traditional decor.

How to Install or Hang Your Painting: A medium-sized painting of the sky and landscape below, which can easily be mounted above furniture or on a clear wall, such as an entryway. It suits a well-lit space in either a traditional or modern home as this will ensure the full range of colours can be appreciated. The Australian gallery standard recommends hanging a painting so that the mid-point of the artwork (height) is approximately 155 cm from the floor. This may vary depending on ceiling height, interior furniture, or whether it is a space where people will be sitting or standing, such as a living room or dining room. It is advisable to avoid hanging oil paintings in direct sunlight, as UV can damage the pigment, resulting in discolouration.
Framing: An original oil painting on stretched canvas of this size and in a contemporary style is often left unframed when installed in art galleries, public or private collections. This work is currently unframed; however, framing can be arranged by agreement. The artwork is ready to hang on Australian gallery standard D-hooks and wire.
