Winter Wind I, after Chopin, 2024, oil on board, 22 x 30 cm

This work forms part of an ongoing investigation into painting in dialogue with musical structure. Referencing the Winter Wind étude by Frédéric Chopin, the painting engages with the contrast between restrained introduction and subsequent acceleration within the composition.

Despite its scale, the image is organised to evoke an expanded atmospheric field. The horizon is lowered, allowing the sky to dominate as an active surface where cloud formations accumulate and disperse. Bare trees act as a linear counterpoint, introducing a finer, more articulated rhythm against the broader movement above.

The painting develops through layered directional marks, creating a sense of ongoing motion rather than a single fixed event. Areas of density and openness alternate across the surface, echoing the shifting intensity and phrasing of the musical source.

Executed alla prima, the work retains immediacy while emphasising responsiveness to tonal and structural change. Wet-on-wet handling allows forms to remain fluid, with marks resolving into a dynamic but cohesive field.

Rather than describing a specific scene, the painting translates underlying conditions—scale, rhythm and atmospheric force—into a visual language shaped by gesture, repetition and material process.

Medium: Oil paint on plywood panel, framed in Italian timber
Subject: Cloud formations over a line of bare winter trees
Colour palette: Cerulean blue, burnt sienna, raw umber, indigo, white
