Into & Beyond III, 2022, oil on board, 30 x 30 cm
This contemporary Australian landscape painting depicts Ganguddy, Dunn’s Swamp in Wollemi National Park, in the late afternoon light. As I walked along the edge of the lake and up the creek, it seemed as though the bush both invited and threatened to entangle me. Glimpses of shimmering water shone between the still trunks. This painting was made in my Blue Mountains studio, over several days. The technique involved layering the oil paint gradually to develop the complexity in texture, colour and shape. The marks, which suggest foliage, water and tree limbs, were made with fine brushes. Up close, they appear almost abstract, yet with some distance, the viewer apprehends a realistic image. Rather than purely realism, the painting falls within the Romantic tradition in that it evokes spiritual and emotive meanings.
Medium: Oil paint on a professional artist-quality plywood panel, ready to hang
Location featured in the Painting: Warrumbungle National Park, NSW, Australia
Genre: Contemporary Australian Landscape Art, Spiritual Landscape Painting
Style: This landscape painting appears to employ a realistic style, however, it is imbued with spiritual and emotive meaning and stories, making it characteristic of the Romantic style of landscape painting.
Subject: Trees and water in the Australian Bush
Colour Scheme: Green, Black, Blue, White, Grey, Violet, Raw Umber
Features: This small landscape oil painting evokes a thicket of trees and branches that seem to frame the water of a lagoon. The lines and shapes create a complex set of interlocking forms that draw the viewer into the image and simultaneously obstruct access through the landscape.
