Dusk on the Ranges, West MacDonnells, 2024, oil on board, 30 x 60 cm
Working quickly in the fading light, this painting captures the glowing pink hues of the rock faces of the west-facing mountains. From a distance, these West MacDonnell peaks appeared small; however, in truth, they towered above me and stretched as far as the eye could see. Painting plein air at dusk required swift, decisive mark-making and sure brushstrokes. The desert light seemed to fade slowly, but once gone, the darkness was complete.
Medium: Oil paint on a professional artist-quality plywood panel, framed in Tasmanian Oak and ready to hang
Location featured in the Painting: West MacDonnell Ranges, Central Australia
Genre: Contemporary Australian Landscape Art, Plein Air Landscape Painting
Style: Plein air landscape paintings are created outdoors, capturing natural light and the changing atmosphere. This technique results in expressive, dynamic brushwork that conveys spontaneity and a strong connection to nature, reflecting the artist’s direct experience of the landscape.
Subject: Waterhole and gorge in the outback of Australia
Colour Scheme: Cobalt, Indigo and Ultramarine blue, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Australian leaf Green
Features: The dusky pink flush across the mountains is a beautiful feature of this plein air painting. Creating an artwork when the light is fading challenges the artist to capture the colours and shadows as quickly as possible with broad, expressive brushstrokes. The deep blue and umber shadows invite the viewer into the intimacy of the landscape.
