Even when your drawings and paintings are technically proficient, the overall effect of the picture may still not feel right, convey your meaning or look pleasing. The elusive factor is probably composition.

In this workshop, you will learn how to create great compositions in a very practical, hands-on approach. By the end of the day, you will understand what composition is, what its core building blocks are and essentially, how to put them together seamlessly in a picture.

What is composition? Why is it so important?

A poor composition can destroy the impact of even the most beautifully executed artwork. So, it’s time to get serious about understanding the hows and whys of good composition!

To put it as simply as possible, composition is the arrangement of elements that make up a picture. Every artwork has a composition, either created consciously or by accident. It is the underlying framework or relationship of all the structural parts of the artwork. The composition of an artwork affects both its aesthetic qualities and the meaning that is conveyed to the viewer. So, it is therefore vital for all artists to have a strong grasp of the theory and practice of creating compositions.
