Drawing Mindfully and Journaling

As you draw, I really encourage you to let go and work mindfully, with an open, playful and exploratory mind. Pay close attention to your own marks and the subject you are working from, and choose to think relationally as you draw. Avoid any value judgements that sound like, ‘This is good/bad/wrong’ or labelling, such as ‘now I’m drawing the ear/hand/collar’.

After you have completed a drawing, it can be useful to reflect on the process by journaling. Here are some questions I use myself that you may also find helpful. Use them all or just pick a couple.

  • As I was drawing, what feelings/emotions did I notice?

  • What could that have been about? (ideas/thoughts/memories)

  • What did I experience in my body? (breathing/sensations/tension/time)

  • As I look at my drawing, can I accept it, without value judgment, as a process of learning and exploration? If not, what do I need to be able to do that? If I can, how does that feel?

  • Can I sense any ‘niggles’ in the drawing - parts that create disquiet, or speak louder than (or stand out from) the whole in an uncomfortable way?

  • When I detach a little from my drawing, is there anything it seems to need? (Create detachment with physical and mental distance - take a photo of the work, use a mirror, stand away, leave the drawing to rest, work on something else and come back.)
